FAQs
- Suitable topics span theoretically informed empirical work and more abstract socio-legal theory. Areas include law’s role in society, regulation, social justice, human rights, constitutional law, comparative law, legal cultures, historical legalism, media law, environmental regulation, and the intersections between law, morality, politics, and culture.
- There is a required “Theory and Methods in Socio-Legal Research” course, which full-time students take during their first year. Part-time candidates may take this over two years. In addition to that, students are encouraged to attend seminars and lectures across social sciences and legal disciplines to build methodological, empirical, and theoretical skills.
- You do not need a first degree in law. Applicants from social sciences and humanities are admitted, provided their research interests align well with socio-legal topics and they have sufficient academic preparation.
- Applicants should normally have a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honours in law OR another social science discipline (such as sociology, anthropology, politics, economics) or in a related humanities field. A master’s degree is common among admitted students, though not always strictly required.
- The full-time DPhil normally takes 3 to 4 years. If done part-time, it can take about 6 to 8 years. Faculty of Law
