• Can I apply for an undergraduate degree course if I am already studying at another UK university?

If you wish to follow an undergraduate course here, you will need to start the course from the beginning. However, this option is not available if you are currently enrolled on a Medicine course elsewhere and wish to apply to study Medicine at Oxford. If you are currently studying at a UK university and are thinking of applying to Oxford to start the first year of an undergraduate course, please note that normally we will only consider such applications in exceptional circumstances and you should make very clear in your application why you do not wish to continue on your current course. Please note we are not able to give examples of these exceptional circumstances as applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If you do decide to apply whilst at another university and you do not have A-level or equivalent qualifications at the grades required for the standard offer for the course you are interested in applying for, you will need to demonstrate how your subsequent study has prepared you for studying at Oxford, including any evidence of your performance on your current course, as well as a reference from your current tutor or equivalent. Please note that you must declare on your UCAS form whether you are currently studying at another university, and that failure to do so could result in Oxford withdrawing any offer made to you. Please also remember that not only will you incur a year of additional costs but your eligibility for government support or loans may be affected by any study you have already undertaken, whether or not you have completed your course.
• Will my application be stronger if I study more than 3 A-levels?
  
  Published 29/07/2011 10.33 AM | Updated 11/04/2024 12.36 PM Offers will normally only be made for three A-levels regardless of how many you are taking, though the offer may specify in which three subjects we want the required grades. A-level requirements range between A*A*A and AAA, depending on the course. Please look at your chosen course page for detailed admissions requirements. Any additional A-levels that you choose to take will be considered, and can help to demonstrate your ability to handle a large workload. However, we recommend that you think carefully before taking on any additional A-levels as this may reduce the time you have to read around your chosen subject beyond your school or college work. You may like to refer to our suggested subject resources page for ideas. We advise candidates not to spread themselves too thinly across too many subjects, where they may risk dropping a grade or two in their results. Our offers are made on the basis of exam grades rather than UCAS Tariff points, so three A*/A grades would be sufficient to meet most conditional offers, but two A*s and two Bs would not.
• Which A-level subjects should I choose?

Some subjects are essential, some are recommended, and others are considered helpful to students in providing background knowledge for their degree course. You can see an overview for all courses on our admissions requirements table, or check on the 'admissions requirements' tab of your chosen course page. As long as any subject requirements have been met, any other subjects at A-level are acceptable, subject to the following exceptions: General Studies (for all courses) Critical Thinking and Thinking Skills (for Biomedical Sciences and Medicine) Global Perspectives and Research (for any course) Cambridge Assessment International Education A-levels in either Global Perspectives or Research and Thinking Skills Oxford’s methods of teaching and learning are strongly academic. As well as tutorials and lectures, students are required to do a great deal of personal studying, reading and preparing essays. We therefore recommend that you also consider which A-levels would best prepare you for this style of learning, and best demonstrate your academic ability. Some courses don’t have any subject requirements and, in this situation, we generally recommend that students take those subjects which they enjoy the most and are most likely to achieve top grades.
• Do I need an English language qualification to apply for undergraduate study?
  
  Published 28/07/2011 04.53 PM | Updated 18/12/2023 12.14 PM Oxford’s undergraduate courses are demanding, and you will need to demonstrate that you have a high level of proficiency in English to take up a place here. If your first language is English and you have always been a resident and citizen of a majority English-speaking country recognised by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) you do not need to demonstrate your level of English. You do not need to have evidence of your English Language proficiency when you make your UCAS application. If you are offered a place, you will need to show the correct level of proficiency by 31 July in the year you receive your offer. Note this deadline applies even if you are not due to start your course until the following October. Recording this qualification If you have already achieved the required level of proficiency, please include the details in the qualifications section of your UCAS application alongside your other educational qualifications. Possible exemptions Exemptions from this English Language requirement will be considered for those who: are studying (or have completed) the International Baccalaureate programme, if it is taught in English are studying (or have completed) the Singapore Integrated Programme (SIPCAL) have been educated full-time in English for at least the two most recent years before applying and who remain in full-time education in this language until completion of their schooling. This means that a minimum of three years of your most recent education must have been in English before the start of your Oxford course. If you believe that you meet one of the criteria for an English language proficiency waiver, please complete the waiver form once it is made available and send it to the college that has made your offer. Age of qualification Unless your English language certificate has an expiry date, the time when this was issued does not affect its validity. If your certificate does have an expiry date, you should ensure that it is valid at the point when you provide it to your college as evidence of English language proficiency. If you need to meet English language conditions, you will be asked to show either a standard or a higher level of ability in English, depending on your course. All courses now require the higher level. • How do I apply for a graduate course?
