Is fieldwork compulsory? No, fieldwork is not compulsory, but it is a significant part of many students’ research projects.
- Research spans social, cultural, medical, biological, and evolutionary anthropology, with topics such as: Migration and migrant populations Social and cultural influences on health Material culture and museums Human cooperation and behaviour Adaptations to environment and technology.
- Most students enter as Probationer Research Students (PRS). The first year includes weekly seminars, research methods modules, and regular meetings with supervisors. Students develop and begin work on their thesis topic during the first year. Fieldwork with human subjects is encouraged but not compulsory. Training in research skills, data analysis, interpretation, and academic writing is provided throughout the programme.
- Full-time: 3–4 years (typically 36 months) Part-time: 6–8 years (typically 72 months).
- A master’s degree with an overall grade of 67% or above. A first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honours (at least one degree should normally be in a branch of anthropology relevant to the proposed research). Distinction-level students in closely related disciplines may be considered, provided they undertake anthropology coursework in their first year.
