- A temporary advisor is assigned upon admission. As you progress, you'll form a PhD supervisory committee consisting of faculty aligned with your research interests. Faculty commitment is a key part of admission and mentorship
- Broad departmental strengths include AI, computer architecture, distributed systems, graphics, cybersecurity, formal methods, HCI, robotics, networks, and VLSI design, among others .
- PhD candidates must complete 20 hours of coursework beyond the Master’s degree, plus dissertation research hours. If entering with just a Bachelor’s, additional coursework is required as advised by the supervisory committee
- No specific prerequisites are mandated. However, applicants are expected to demonstrate solid preparation in mathematics and core CS topics like data structures, architecture, algorithms, and operating systems
- Yes—USF admits applicants with a Bachelor’s degree directly into the PhD program; a prior Master’s is not required
