Supersonic and hypersonic flows contain density fluctuations that affect the performance of optical sensors and present challenging aerothermodynamic environments with extreme surface heating. The project uses scale-resolving numerical simulation to understand the flow physics and develop new prediction methods, construct reduced order fluid dynamic and optical models, and study flow control schemes to reduce heat loads and improve optical properties. You will be based in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Boldrewood Innovation Campus in Southampton and the project is offered as part of the UK Hypersonic Doctoral Training Network, coordinated by the University of Oxford. The role involves using exascale-level high performance computers based on modern heterogenous GPU/CPU architectures and working with large data processing techniques and reduced order modelling methods. Training will be provided and there are opportunities to present at internal and international conferences.
