- Students have access to UiS library services, digital media labs, journalism research groups, the Department of Media and Social Sciences’ networks, doctoral research seminars, and interdisciplinary projects with Norwegian and international partners.
- Applicants must hold a relevant master’s degree (normally in media studies, journalism, communication, or related social sciences disciplines) with a strong academic record (equivalent to a B or better in the Norwegian grading scale). A well-developed research proposal aligned with the department’s expertise is required.
- Research areas include journalism studies, media production and practice, media innovation, political communication, media policy and regulation, digital journalism, data and algorithmic media, audience and reception studies, social media and democracy, media ethics, global journalism, and interdisciplinary media and communication research.
- The PhD normally takes 3 years of full-time study. If combined with teaching or other departmental duties, it may extend to 4 years.
