- Students have access to the University Library, archives and special collections, the Institute for Advanced Studies, research training provided by the Graduate School, departmental seminars, interdisciplinary research centres, and opportunities to present at national and international conferences.
- Yes. Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of English language proficiency, usually through IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, or an equivalent qualification meeting the University’s requirements.
- Applicants are normally expected to hold a Master’s degree in English Literature or a closely related field. Strong academic performance and a clear, well-developed research proposal are required. Exceptionally, candidates with outstanding undergraduate achievement may be admitted to MPhil leading to PhD.
- Research supervision is offered across a broad range of areas including medieval and Renaissance literature, eighteenth-century and Romantic studies, Victorian and fin-de-siècle literature, twentieth- and twenty-first-century writing, Scottish literature, American literature, postcolonial and world literatures, eco-criticism, medical humanities, women’s writing, gender and sexuality studies, life writing, creative-critical approaches, and literary theory.
- The PhD usually takes 3–4 years full-time or 5–7 years part-time. The MPhil typically takes 1–2 years full-time or 2–4 years part-time.
