FAQs

  • You will undertake independent and original research, write a thesis, and defend it in a viva voce (oral examination). You will also receive support from expert supervisors and have access to researcher development programmes
  • The John Anderson Research Studentship Scheme (JARSS) and other university or externally funded studentships may be available for outstanding candidates. Faculties set their own deadlines, so you should contact the Law School early if you wish to be considered for funding
  • You must submit a research proposal (about 1,500–2,000 words), transcripts and certificates of all degrees, your CV, and proof of English proficiency if required. Applications are made directly through the Strathclyde course webpage
  • The PhD is typically a three-year, full-time research degree. Part-time options may be available and would take longer
  • If English is not your first language, you need an IELTS score of 6.5 overall (with no band less than 5.5) or a TOEFL iBT score of 80 overall (with minimum component scores: Listening 17, Reading 18, Speaking 20, Writing 18)
  • You generally need a first or upper second class UK Honours degree (2:1), or an overseas equivalent, in a relevant discipline from a recognised institution. In the humanities and social sciences (including law), a master’s qualification is often requested, especially for competitive or funded places. International applicants should have a GPA of at least 2.8 out of 4.0 or 60%, but requirements may vary by country and background
