Research by the team currently focuses on different aspects of PFAS (per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances) sonolysis. This project will aim to engineer and test a new approach that compliments current work by the group with industrial relevance. Sonolysis via high frequency ultrasound is one of few technologies able to fully mineralise PFAS. However, PFAS bound to solids (sorbents and soils) create a technical challenge for direct sonolysis. This project will research and develop solutions for this challenge, alongside consideration of mixed contamination matrices./nMixed contamination matrices present a challenge for analysis and the project will require significant engagement with i) chemistry of PFAS destruction in mixed matrices, ii) engineering technical solutions and iii) development and implementation of analytical protocols (LCMS, ion analysis)./nThe candidate will be part of a larger group working on different aspects of sonolysis challenges (~8 PGRs, led by Dr Bussemaker), alongside a well-equipped mass spectrometry group (5 PGRs led by Dr Sears) in collaboration with company sponsors, Mantisonix. Close collaboration with Mantisonix will involve a minimum 3-month secondment at the company over the course of the PhD (located in walking distance from the university). The largely practical work will involve attendance at the university/company ~4 days per week.
