Overview
PhD Studentship: When things won't let go: mathematical modelling of a sticky problem in industrial drying/nSupervisor: Dr Thomas Hudson, University of Warwick/nLocation: Coventry, University of Warwick/nMany industrial companies dry their chemical products into powders to aid wide transportation and distribution. This process often takes place in large scale driers where the material is heated and broken up mechanically with mixing blades. However, under certain conditions the process may break down: the material sticks to the edges of the drier, causing wastage of the product, and in extreme cases, deterioration of the drier itself./nThis research aims to develop a new multi-physics model to describe the material properties of these drying powders, with the aim of identifying the culprits of wall adhesion./nAbout HetSys: Harnessing Data, Modelling and Simulation for Real‑World Impact/nHetSys (Centre for Doctoral Training in Modelling of Heterogeneous Systems) at the University of Warwick is an innovative, interdisciplinary fully funded PhD programme that brings together science, engineering, and mathematics to tackle some of the most pressing challenges of our time./nBig Questions, Real Impact – From climate modelling and sustainable energy to advanced materials and biomedical systems, HetSys projects apply cutting‑edge computational and mathematical techniques to problems with global significance./nInterdisciplinary Training – Students gain expertise across physics, engineering, computer science, and applied mathematics, developing versatile skills that open doors to both academia and industry./nCollaborative Environment – Work alongside leading researchers and industry partners in a supportive, vibrant community that values curiosity, creativity, and collaboration./nFuture‑Focused Careers – HetSys graduates are equipped with highly sought‑after skills in modelling, simulation, and data science, preparing them for impactful careers in research, technology, and beyond.
