About the project:/nUnder pressure: Predictive modelling of battery ageing across the scales/nSupervisor: Dr Lukasz Figiel, University of Warwick/nLithium-ion batteries are essential for electric vehicles and achieving net-zero targets, but they degrade over time, reducing performance and safety./nA key issue is gas generation, which causes internal pressure build-up and can lead to cell failure, but existing models struggle to capture this complex, multiscale phenomenon efficiently./nThis project will develop a novel, physics-informed surrogate model using Bayesian machine learning to predict gas generation and pressure evolution./nOur approach will combine physical insight with data-driven techniques and uncertainty quantification, offering fast, reliable predictions and contributing to safer, longer-lasting batteries./nAbout HetSys: Harnessing Data, Modelling and Simulation for Real‑World Impact/nHetSys (Centre for Doctoral Training in/nModelling of Heterogeneous Systems/n) at the University of Warwick is an innovative, interdisciplinary fully funded PhD programme that brings together science, engineering, and mathematics to tackle some of the most pressing challenges of our time./nBig Questions, Real Impact/n– From climate modelling and sustainable energy to advanced materials and biomedical systems, HetSys projects apply cutting‑edge computational and mathematical techniques to problems with global significance./nInterdisciplinary Training/n– Students gain expertise across physics, engineering, computer science, and applied mathematics, developing versatile skills that open doors to both academia and industry./nCollaborative Environment/n– Work alongside leading researchers and industry partners in a supportive, vibrant community that values curiosity, creativity, and collaboration./nFuture‑Focused Careers/n– HetSys graduates are equipped with highly sought‑after skills in modelling, simulation, and data science, preparing them for impactful careers in research, technology, and beyond./nIf you’re excited by the idea of using advanced modelling and simulation to solve complex, real‑world problems, HetSys offers the perfect environment to push boundaries and make a difference.
