FAQs

  • No. The PhD (MA/PhD Track) at the University of Washington is available only on a full-time basis.
  • Students complete MA-level coursework and a qualifying paper, followed by PhD coursework, language requirements, comprehensive exams, a dissertation prospectus, and then the dissertation itself. The degree is awarded upon successful submission and defense of the doctoral dissertation.
  • Students have access to the University of Washington Libraries and Special Collections, the Simpson Center for the Humanities, departmental research groups and seminars, interdisciplinary centres, professional development workshops, and opportunities to present at national and international conferences.
  • Applicants must hold a strong undergraduate degree in English or a related discipline. Application materials include a statement of purpose, a writing sample (15–20 pages), transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. Applicants may enter directly to the MA/PhD track; a separate Master’s degree is not required. GRE scores are not required.
  • Research areas include medieval and early modern literature, Shakespeare and Renaissance studies, eighteenth-century British literature, Romanticism, Victorian studies, American literature from colonial to contemporary, African American and African diasporic literature, Native American and Indigenous literatures, Asian American literature, postcolonial and global Anglophone studies, modernism, contemporary poetry and fiction, cultural and critical theory, rhetoric and composition, book history, digital humanities, environmental humanities, performance studies, gender and sexuality studies, and interdisciplinary work across history, politics, and philosophy.
  • The combined MA/PhD track normally takes 6–7 years of full-time study to complete.
