FAQs

  • Admission is highly competitive, with only about 5–7 applicants admitted each year. A strong research proposal and confirmed faculty supervision are essential
  • PhD students must complete at least 90 credits, including a minimum of 60 course credits and 27 dissertation credits (LAW 800). Up to 30 credits from a relevant master’s degree may be counted toward the total with approval
  • The program requires a minimum of three years of study, with at least two years in residence at UW. Most students complete the program in 3–5 years, depending on their progress and research
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required for graduate degrees at the University of Washington, including the PhD in Law
  • Applicants must have an LL.M. degree or, in exceptional circumstances, an equivalent advanced degree. Preference is given to those who have strong support from a UW Law faculty member willing to chair their supervisory committee. Applicants must submit a dissertation proposal, statement of purpose, writing sample, study plan, and letters of recommendation from their prospective committee members.
