FAQs
- Funding is available through University of Westminster studentships, scholarships from the Westminster Graduate School, and external funding bodies. Applicants are advised to check the university’s website for current opportunities.
- Applicants are normally expected to hold a Master’s degree in English Literature, Creative Writing, or a related discipline. A strong academic record, a clear research proposal, and (for creative writing applicants) a portfolio of creative work are required. Exceptionally, candidates with first-class undergraduate achievement and substantial relevant experience may be considered for MPhil leading to PhD.
- Students have access to the University Library, Westminster’s archives and special collections, Graduate School research training programmes, departmental seminars, writing workshops, and opportunities to present research at national and international conferences.
- Yes. Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of English proficiency, usually through IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, or an equivalent qualification meeting the University’s requirements.
- Supervision is available in a wide range of areas including English literature from the early modern to the contemporary period, postcolonial studies, world literatures, cultural studies, gender and sexuality studies, creative-critical writing, life writing, narrative theory, modern and contemporary poetry and fiction, drama and performance, and creative writing in forms such as poetry, prose, and screenwriting.
- The PhD usually takes 3–4 years full-time or 5–7 years part-time. The MPhil typically takes 1–2 years full-time or 2–4 years part-time.
