- Graduates are prepared for academic, clinical, research, and other professional careers. Many students publish research before earning their degree and go on to positions in universities, research centers, and clinical settings
- The required curriculum may take more than five years to complete, depending on the area and student progress

The program aims to produce graduates who can both create new knowledge in psychopathology and practice professional clinical psychology grounded in empirical science. Students develop expertise in both assessment and treatment of psychopathology
- No, the department does not offer a terminal master’s in psychology. Students may earn a master’s degree en route to the PhD, but all admissions are for the PhD program
- The program offers six main areas of concentration (area groups): Biological Clinical Cognitive and Cognitive Neuroscience Developmental Perception Social and Personality Students are typically admitted into one of these areas, but there is also an Individualized Graduate Major for those whose interests cross traditional boundaries.
