PhD position in "Nanoscale Rock Magnetism and Magnetic Imaging" at Utrecht University, Department of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht, Netherlands./nThis project is part of the ERC Consolidator project SPARK and aims to unlock magnetic information stored in nanoscale vortex-state particles in rocks and geological materials, experimentally investigating which vortex-state particles are reliable recorders of the Earth’s magnetic field and how to obtain the information hidden within them./nResearch focuses on empirical characterization of individual magnetic particles combining state-of-the-art magnetic imaging with advanced electron microscopy techniques and generating datasets for data-driven micromagnetic modelling./nFacilities: Paleomagnetic Laboratory Fort Hoofddijk (two Quantum Diamond Microscopes and a Quantum Scanning Microscope), Utrecht University’s Electron Microscopy Center (FIB-SEM), and dedicated CPU and GPU computing infrastructure./nStart date can be as soon as 1 April 2026 or as late as 1 September 2026.
