PhD trajectories can start at any point throughout the year; there are no fixed application deadlines like traditional programs. Individual advertised positions have their own deadlines.

Applicants must hold a recognised Master’s degree (or equivalent) with a solid background in theory and methods in their field, demonstrate advanced oral and written English proficiency (level C1), and show strong scientific/research quality (e.g., research master’s thesis, publications). Admission is tailored to individual research projects and supervisory arrangements.

PhD candidates employed by the university are treated as university employees (no standard tuition). Fellowship/external PhD students are required to pay tuition fees to reimburse university services; exact amounts are not provided and candidates are directed to contact the institute research director. Utrecht University does not generally provide PhD scholarships; the Graduate School receives scholarship candidates only if the scholarship is at least the Dutch net minimum wage and typically for scholarships of at least four years for candidates residing in the Netherlands.
