Candidates must hold a master's degree comparable to a Dutch master's degree (degrees from the Netherlands and the European Higher Education Area are automatically recognised). Non-Anglophone candidates must meet English language requirements or be exempt through nationality or holding a master's taught in English. Funding must be guaranteed prior to starting a PhD. Dutch language proficiency is required if the thesis will be written in Dutch.

WUR states there is no application fee for PhD programs. PhD candidates are typically employed on 4–5 year temporary contracts and do not pay tuition fees; funding must be guaranteed for the candidate to start.
