- All admitted PhD students receive full funding for six years, including tuition remission, a living stipend, health coverage, and summer research funding. Additional support is available through teaching fellowships and external fellowships.
- Supervision is offered in medieval and Renaissance literature, Shakespeare studies, seventeenth- and eighteenth-century literature, Romanticism, Victorian studies, modernism, contemporary writing, American literature from colonial to present, African American literature, postcolonial and world literatures, poetry and poetics, drama, narrative theory, cultural studies, critical theory, gender and sexuality studies, environmental humanities, digital humanities, and interdisciplinary research across literature, history, politics, religion, and philosophy.
- Students have access to Yale’s extensive library system, including the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, departmental workshops and seminars, research centres such as the Whitney Humanities Center, professional development training, and opportunities for teaching and conference participation.
- Applicants are normally expected to hold a strong undergraduate degree in English or a related discipline, and many admitted students also hold a Master’s degree. Required application materials include a statement of purpose, a substantial academic writing sample, transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. GRE scores are not required.
- The PhD normally takes 6 years of full-time study.
