The University of Rochester is one of the country's leading private research universities. The uniquely flexible Rochester Curriculum invites students to study what they love, allowing for both focus and flexibility. There are no required subjects; students' interests drive their education. The University is a community where about three quarters of undergraduates live on campus. The expectation is that each student will live up to the University's motto, "Meliora" (ever better), recognizing that they are future leaders in industry, education, and culture. Rochester remains one of the most collegiate among top research universities, with smaller classes and a 9:1 student-faculty ratio. Rochester faculty publish articles across the globe, win awards for their work, and collaborate with undergraduate students on a level that is rare in higher education. There is no typical Rochester student, but students describe themselves as "cool nerds." With a reputation as a global leader in international education, students and faculty come from around the world, and from underrepresented communities within the U.S., so diverse perspectives characterize all aspects of life at Rochester.
