Overview

The University of Rochester is one of the country's leading private research universities. Rochester operates on a personal scale, creating exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary study and close work with faculty. The University consistently ranks among the top in federally financed science, engineering, medical, and other research. Its College, School of Arts and Sciences, and Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences are complemented by the Eastman School of Music, Simon Business School, Warner School of Education, and Schools of Medicine and Nursing. The uniquely flexible Rochester Curriculum invites students to study what they love, allowing for both focus and flexibility. There are no required subjects; students' interests drive their education. Students major in either sciences and engineering, humanities, or social sciences and complete a "cluster" of at least three related courses in each of the other two areas. The University is a community where about three quarters of undergraduates live on campus. With more than 250 student organizations, ranging from cultural and political to religious and athletic, Rochester students find communities of friends who share their interests and passions. The expectation is that each student will live up to the University's motto, "Meliora" (ever better), recognizing that they are future leaders in industry, education, and culture. Rochester remains one of the most collegiate among top research universities, with smaller classes and a 9:1 student-faculty ratio. Rochester faculty publish articles across the globe, win awards for their work, and collaborate with undergraduate students on a level that is rare in higher education. There is no typical Rochester student, but students describe themselves as "cool nerds." With a reputation as a global leader in international education, students and faculty come from around the world, and from underrepresented communities within the U.S., so diverse perspectives characterize all aspects of life at Rochester. Rochester's admissions office employs a holistic application review to identify curious, capable and engaged students from across the globe. Care is taken to understand each applicant's academic ability, extracurricular engagement, and ethical character to determine their ability to improve both the campus and the world around them.
