Overview

The University of the South, known familiarly as "Sewanee," is a residential liberal arts college offering an education that combines serious intellectual pursuit, collaborative learning, civic engagement, and spiritual growth in an unmatched outdoor setting. Sewanee's 13,000-acre campus on Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau provides space for study, reflection, and recreation. Largely forested and rich in biodiversity, the campus is a distinctive asset offering an unparalleled outdoor laboratory and boundless recreational opportunities. With about 1,700 undergraduates, Sewanee remains purposefully small and dedicated to building a sense of community. Sewanee is known for close faculty-student interaction and for its traditions of honor, community, and respect. Students have administered Sewanee's Honor Code for more than 100 years. The University of the South is consistently ranked among the top tier of national liberal arts universities; 27 Rhodes Scholars and 35 NCAA postgraduate scholarship recipients have graduated from Sewanee. Sewanee is committed to a rigorous academic curriculum that focuses on the liberal arts and sciences. It offers 39 majors, 43 minors, and pre-professional programs including health, business, education, engineering, and law. The university is known as a crossroads where many of America's best writers gather; contemporary poets, novelists, and playwrights conduct writing classes, readings, and workshops as part of the Tennessee Williams writers-in-residence program. Undergraduate research thrives in areas from chemistry to economics to the visual arts, and it's featured each spring in a campus-wide celebration of student scholarship and creativity.
